An IFC should exist as a consortium among men’s general college fraternity chapters on a campus, and the council’s purpose should be to work on behalf of and for the betterment of its member chapters. This includes advancing the value of and access to the fraternity experience on campus, creating interest in joining a fraternity, coordinating educational experiences, promoting safety and prevention efforts and collectively addressing critical issues.
Further, the purpose of the IFC shall be to:
- Promote mutual cooperation between its member chapters;
- Promote mutual cooperation between the IFC, the fraternity and sorority at-large, student organizations and administration;
- Discuss questions of mutual interest and present such recommendations as the IFC deems appropriate;
- Undertake efforts beyond the resources of any one member chapter;
- Promote the interests of men’s fraternities in general; · Align with the Standards and Positions of the NIC;
- Hold member chapters accountable to an IFC Code of Conduct, Membership Eligibility, defined Member Chapter Minimum Expectations and IFC policies;
- Advocate for equal treatment and due process for its member chapters, especially as compared to other student organizations;
- Maintain appropriate levels of administrative oversight and staffing support.
Put more simply: the IFC should deliver Advocacy, Marketing, Collaboration, Education and Accountability. It should offer clarity and consistency across the fraternity experience on campus — but not control or constrict.
The council and its member chapters should adopt its own Constitution and Bylaws in accordance with these purposes. The NIC offers model governing documents as template for IFCs.
Interfraternity Council (IFC) is an endorsed, trademarked brand of the NIC. It is an NIC Standard that member organization chapters be members of a dues-paying IFC with adequate insurance coverage.

NIC Support for IFCs
Dues-paying IFCs receive access to the NIC’s IFC Insurance Program (general liability, commercial crime and director and officer coverage at a greatly reduced rate, billed separately) and NIC Campus Support benefits that include coaching and guidance from NIC staff and trusted industry experts, training and resources for IFC officers and advisors, campus programs and more. IFC communities should leverage NIC research initiatives to positively promote the fraternity experience, which among other things, can help boost recruitment and improve community outreach.
THE IFC CREED
We, the Interfraternity Council, exist to promote the shared interests and values of our member fraternities: leadership, service, brotherhood and scholarship. We believe in Fraternity and that the shared values of Fraternity drive the IFC to create better communities, better chapters and better men.
We work to advance the academic mission of the host institution, to enable fraternal organizations to grow and thrive through collaboration and teamwork, to provide an outlet for self-governance and accountability, and to model and teach ethical leadership. In a spirit of mutual support and betterment, we, the men of the Interfraternity Council, pledge to elevate the Ritual and the values of the member organizations.
